Q: Describe your role in Bio-Itzá and what happens behind the scenes. How much time do you spend working for Bio-Itzá?

A: In 2004, I began coordinating all program activities in the forest. I started working for Bio-Itzá at age 15 because I wanted to learn how to use computers and now I want to work for this organization for all my life. Bio-Itzá provides training for the youth on how to use computers, prepare medicinal plants, how to maintain the forest.

Q: Why is the rainforest special to you and why do you feel an obligation to protect it?

A: It is part of our culture. Our ancestors used the forest to find food and medicine, and this has continued from generation to generation. For me it is important to continue this tradition so the next generation has the opportunity to know the forest.

Q: As an indigenous Guatemalan, how do your personal feelings influence the protection of these sacred sites?

A: The sites represent the heritage of our ancestors and tell us about their wisdom, maintaining respect for our culture. It is important to protect historical value and is a big responsibility—it is our most important goal.

Q: When you return home to Guatemala, what will you tell your friends and family about the Augustana College community?

A: When I return on Oct. 15, I will inform my organization about all of my activities here, and share with everyone about the new possibilities we have and that Augustana wants to support Bio-Itzá. This is a beautiful experience and I will describe how Augustana is similar to my village, San Jose (population of about 1,200 people) because it is also very calm, friendly, clean and safe. I will share with them about how our culture (Maya Itzá) is similar to the Lakota because both have costumes, traditions and ceremonies. I want to say that I am very happy. This was my first time in the U.S. I thought it would be very different, but it is similar. The relation with Augustana was accidental, but it has been very good.
