During college, he was the guy behind the camera at KVRR TV Fox News in Fargo. Today, Tim Gerszewski, 23, is on the other side of things as sports information director (SID) at Augustana.
Leaving his video camera and bags of equipment up north with the news crew, Gerszewski continues his career at Augustana ready to utilize his undergraduate degree in mass communications and his master's degree in sports leadership. His experience in TV also equips him well for his new job.
"In college, I thought I wanted to go into TV," Gerszweski said. "But after working in it, I found that it's too stressful and you have to take yourself too seriously. Then I found out about sports leadership, and I thought it'd be a good fit. I could go and be passionate about being an SID during the day, but I wouldn't have to go home with it at night."
As SID, Gerszewski's main duties include engaging in media and public relations, managing the Go Augie website, creating media guides and archiving sports records.
Replacing former SID Kevin Ludwig, Gerszewski begins his work at Augustana with high hopes for what he can accomplish.
"I think there are some areas of sports information that aren't where they need to be here at Augie," Gerszweski said. "Historical books and archives are a couple. We want to get them all online."
With a few things to focus on specifically, Gerszewski believes that he not only can help strengthen Augustana's athletic department, but also maintain what already has been done.
Vice President for Marketing Bob Preloger sat on the interviewing committee for Gerszewski last May, and instantly noted Gerszewski's "smart and instinctive" nature.
"He's an achiever, and someone who wants to do his job extremely well," Preloger said. "Although he has two degrees from public universities, he has quickly become an Augie guy who fits right into our spirited and unique Augustana culture."
With this being Gerszewski's first gig in the world of sports leadership, he is convinced that he is right where he wants to be.
"The natural progression for someone in athletics is moving from DII to DI," Gerszewski said. "But it's not necessarily true for SIDs. I like it here. I like DII, and I don't really see myself going anywhere fast. Sometimes, I still think I don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but today I'm happy."
Gerszewski is one who searches for meaning and fulfillment in his career, but also he strives to keep work interesting and entertaining.
"He doesn't forget to have fun," Jeff Holm, associate athletic director said. "He always has a smile and friendly attitude. Augustana has gained enthusiasm, professionalism, integrity and humor by hiring Tim."
