Hoping to do well in the Northern Sun Intercolligiate Conference fall championship, the Augustana men's golf team is practicing hard and working on putting two solid team rounds together for the event.
Placing fourth in the NSIC preview in Hudson, Wisc. at the beginning of the fall season, the Augustana men's team looked to be off to a good start.
The team later placed ninth at the SCSU Husky Classic in St. Cloud , Minn.
"Right now we are having some guys play well some weeks, and some a different week instead of all together at the same time," senior Paul Barduson said.
The Augustana team recently placed 18th at the NSIC/RMAC Crossover in Gothenburg, Neb. but had a hard time getting the team to put all their scores together for a good team total.
"We really struggled to get four scores up there. We had three but never that key fourth one which is tough but still it was fun to see a new course," senior Julean Michels said.
The Augustana team is working to build as the season goes on and into the spring.
"I think this year we have the potential to be very good, whereas last year we really struggled with consistency," Michels said.
Without consistency, the team has struggled to compete with some of the top teams in the conference.
The NSIC championship is a nine-team tournament played in the fall and also in the spring. The first two rounds are played in the fall and the last three in the spring, making it a five round event.
"We are very exited for the NSIC tourney in a few weeks. Its always something we want to do well in so we set ourselves up for a good position in the spring," Barduson said.
The NSIC championship will be played October 2 and 3 in Hastings, Minn. which will conclude the Augustana men's fall season. The team's toughest competitors going into the championship will be St. Cloud and Mankato.
"I am very excited for the Championship this weekend. I hit the ball really well at the conference preview and putted poorly," Michels said.
Michels continued that his game improved later on, and if he puts two good rounds together, he feels he can compete.
Last year the Augustana men were in fourth after the first two rounds in the fall championship.
"I think our team this year will be better then last year once we come together and start playing more consistent golf," Barduson said.
