In light of last year's events leading up to the Augustana versus University of Sioux Falls (USF) basketball game, Augustana President Rob Oliver took a preventative measure this week in issuing a letter to all Augustana students.

That letter, which can be accessed through the student portal, mentions the good, the bad and the ugly of last year, and how the school aims for this year to be different.

"What starts out as simple fun in the name of school spirit and rivalry can easily get out of hand," the letter reads, "and result in serious property damage, or even worse-injury to someone who set out to be with friends and have some fun."

While some students may scoff at such a request, junior Drew Doshier, president of the Augieholics fan group, hopes that students will listen and respect President Oliver's wishes.

"I think that President Oliver is spot on with his message to Augie students," Doshier said.  "The situation between Augie and USF elevated to one of property destruction and violence last year.  As much fun as a peaceful, yet intense, rivalry would be, that is clearly not the case."

Last year, students from each school marched back and forth between campuses throughout the evening, finally resulting in a confrontation near the Ole statue on campus.

What started in simple school rivalry quickly became a flurry of spoiled milk, eggs, rocks, fireworks and a trash dumpster set on fire.

One Augustana student was hospitalized after the near-riot.

"When fires are set, people are punched, and even one kid makes a trip to the hospital, things have gone far past acceptable," Doshier said.  "It is sad that some of this excitement is being removed due to some very serious issues at hand."

Oliver also stated in the letter that he hopes for the student body to show up for the game and cheer on their team.

"Let's all resolve to be positive, cheer loudly in support of our Augustana Vikings at the basketball game."

With that call to action, however, came a stern warning to "...let the action be on the court. Stay away from their campus."

Doshier agreed.

"First off, I just want to say that I love beating USF. However, in doing this, I hope we can keep our cheers classy and clever," Doshier said.  "Go all out, for sure, but let's remember that we are in the presence of people other than students. There will be parents, alumni, administrators, and most importantly children at the game. Every single one of these groups will notice what we are doing."
