Welcome to March Madness folks!
The next few weeks are what college basketball fans yearn for throughout the year, as office hours lack in productivity and dreams of picking a perfect bracket slowly die with each upset.
With ESPN's Joe Lunardi gaining national fame for his Bracketology 101, I've become jealous of a man whose job is predicting the future, earning millions of followers and spending time "researching" different basketball programs. Sounds like a dream job to me.
So, without further ado, here is the SognCenter 2011 Bracketology.
First, Ohio State is going to be the number one seed overall.
Fact is, they are good.
Freshman Jared Sullinger has proved he can take over games, and William Buford is executes when it comes to making tough shots.
Now, I realize Lunardi has this exact same pick, but the fact that they will receive the No. 1 pick doesn't mean I think the Buckeyes will win in the later rounds of the tournament.
The Big Ten Conference hasn't had a team win a national championship since Michigan State won it in 2000 (Michigan in 1989 before that), and a majority of the teams in the conference always seem to be overrated once they play teams in the other major conferences.
My next pick is dealing with St. John's University.
They are going to be a popular sleeper pick for the tournament (based on their upsets so far this season), but people get overly hopeful that a lower-tier team will beat a favored team.
So, pick St. John's if you want too, but my expectation is that they will lose in the first round.
The Big East is strong, but St. John's isn't one of the strong teams in it.
Third, the Pacific coast is still awful. What happened to the days of UCLA, California and Arizona ranking as the nation's best?
Something must be in the waters of the Pacific, because no Pac-10 or Mountain West team is going to do much damage in the tournament.
Sure, Brigham Young and San Diego State will probably win a game or two, but look for the east coast teams to win in head-to-head matchups.
Fourth, one of the mid-majors will make the Elite Eight.
With such an even field where no team has established themselves as a favorite, perhaps George Mason or Oakland, if they make the tournament, will make a Cinderella story run at the bigger schools.
Fifth, and finally, North Carolina could win it all.
Wait, what?
Despite all I've said in praise of Duke University, the fact is, North Carolina is looking really good at the end of the year.
Freshman Harrison Barnes seems to be unshaken when playing on the big stage, and head coach Roy Williams always seems to have a little bit of luck to accompany any team he coaches.
As a Blue Devil fan, writing these words are painful, but I think North Carolina is the Atlantic Coast Conference team with the best shot at a national championship.
So, with March Madness a week away, remember that you may have only one chance to witness a last-second winning shot, a shocking upset or perhaps, a No. 1 seed finally falling in the first round.
Take every opportunity to sit on the couch for hours at a time, eat as much pizza as possible and take in the madness.
