For the first time in Madden history, EA Sports is allowing the fans to pick the cover player on its most recent Madden football video game. ESPN set up a bracketed tournament of 32 players–one from each team–and let fans vote to determine the winner.
After weeks of voting the championship matchup is now set. The final round features Peyton Hillis versus Michael Vick.
Let me repeat myself. The fans did not choose MVP Tom Brady, Super Bowl winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers or even Andre Johnson, arguably the best wide receiver in the game.
Instead, two players, Hillis and Vick, that didn't even begin last season as starters on their respective teams are set to duel it out for the honor.
Now don't get me wrong, I do have a favorite in this matchup, but I still enjoy comparing statistics.
Every time I saw a highlight from the Cleveland Browns, Hillis seemed to be running over a helpless defensive back for a touchdown. And Vick was named the comeback player of the year.
It is still just an interesting matchup to me. Vick is less than 2 years removed from prison and in 2009 Hillis ran for 54 total yards.
I love it when two players are able to turn their careers around and become popular among fans. The fact that Vick was placed in the championship by fans doesn't surprise me that much.
But Peyton Hillis? That one really baffles me.
Aside from Cleveland Browns fans last year, I'm not sure there was a person that owned a Peyton Hillis jersey.
Hillis upset Aaron Rodgers in the semi-finals while Vick defeated Adrian Peterson, arguably a very popular choice among fans.
I've already heard numerous people complaining how Rodgers should be on the cover. I'll be the first one to admit he probably had the best season of any player last year. But, he won the Lombardi trophy and they even gave him a belt. I think he'll survive without the Madden cover.
Plus, don't complain if you are a fan. The fans chose it.
As to who gets my vote now? I'd have to lean toward Hillis since Vick was already on the cover in 2004.
However, both players are deserving and turned their careers around in 2010.
Now lets just hope the famous "Madden Curse" that has seemed to get every other player placed on the cover in the past avoids both of these comeback players.
