Senior honor societies consolidate to eliminate competition, discrimination
By Ruth Aartun
Blue Key, the currently all-male senior honor fraternity at Augustana and Chi Epsilon, the currently all-female senior honor society, are continuing to make progress toward a merger.
The merger would unite the two groups under the name Blue Key. At a meeting earlier this fall, Blue Key passed a motion to invite the women of Chi Epsilon to join its fraternity.
Should an invitation be extended, Chi Epsilon has voted to accept it. Ideally, the merger will happen sometime during the 2002-2003 academic year.
"I'm urging both parties to move forward with as much haste as possible," said Jim Bies, Augustana dean of students.
The next step is for the men to officially offer the invitation. Augustana senior and co-president of Chi Epsilon, Leah Kamen, says that talk of a merger began last spring.
