Christian life, not the simple life

For some strange reason, people—some new Christians especially—seem to believe that the life of a Christian is somehow simpler than the life of a non-Christian.

It is as if they believe this decision brings about a change in God's treatment of us.

Like once we're Christians, all our problems are solved. As nice as that would be for Christians if it were true, it just isn't.

We don't get special treatment and we certainly aren't favored.

We still lose loved ones, we still get cheated and we are still subdued to all the evil that everyone else faces.

I would guess that this fallacy has become popular due to the way Christians handle disruption in their worlds. Some—certainly not all—Christians have specific and intriguing methods.

Not to oversimplify, but I would call that method faith. When something bad or even unfair happens, they have an understanding, or faith, that God is still in control and will never abandon his people.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV) says this: "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged."

This verse implies that this life will not be a walk in the park. But it doesn't leave us with that fact alone. It also provides us with hope that we are not alone and that God will help us through the burdens life throws at us.

Matthew 19:26 tells us that with God all things are possible. And that includes surviving a rough patch in your life just as much as it does feeding thousands with some loaves and fish.

So God is with us at all times, during times of trial, as well as during times of triumph. For many Christians, this is enough.

That doesn't mean we are automatically healed after devastation the moment we remember God is with us.

It just means that to know that God is with us no matter what we are facing, that He is facing it too, feeling what we feel and pulling us though, helps.

We also know that we can always get through it, because we have God. That doesn't make getting through it a quick process, but knowing it's possible, makes a substantial difference.

So no, our lives are not easier. No we do not have all of the questions answered.

We just know that we don't always have to understand why. We only have to trust what we do know. That we can count on the one who created us to always carry us through.

So if you believe God is with you at all times and that he'll get you through when the going gets rough, but you still have a hard time remembering that when the going is rough, I have a couple suggestions.

My first suggestion is to be patient with yourself. Just like our lives aren't easier, having this faith in what we know isn't easier either.

While being patient with yourself, though, try and note your reactions to negative happenings.

Negative reactions are perfectly acceptable. It's easy to think that it isn't fair when someone you love dies because it truly isn't fair. But that doesn't stop it from happening.

Remind yourself that God is a great comforter and let Him be your comforter. And also, taking it one day at a time, and deciding to not rush healing, helps a lot too.
