New lot paves way to space (1987)
By Steve Nelson
Construction has begun on a new 65-space parking lot between Granskou and East Hall.
According to Director of the Augustana Physical Plant Gene Marko, the lot was conceived to meet the additional parking needs brought on by the influx of freshmen and transfer students applying for parking permits.
Marko said parking has traditionally been overcrowded on the north end of campus with only 221 parking spots currently available to serve 606 students living in Granskou, Stavig, Tuve and East Halls.
In the past, north-end students who had been unable to buy a space on their end of campus were assigned permits for the Solberg and Bergsaker parking
lots. This year, almost all of the ap-
proximately 280 spots available on the south end of campus were taken up by students living on that end.
Because owners were unable to secure spots on the north end of campus and the south end was also full, 130 students were put on a waiting list in case additional spaces could be found.
