Another one just showed up in my news feed. ''No-name'' is in a ''complicated relationship'' with ''loser.'' I cringe and wonder why people feel the need to broadcast their relationship problems on Facebook.
If you are not an avid Facebook user, this editorial will probably make little to no sense to you. But if you are, read on.
I started using Facebook around the same time I started college, four years ago. At that time, Facebook was mainly used for college students to communicate with friends their own age. Since then, Facebook has evolved into a massive social network: moms, dads, grandmas and even your 10-year-old cousin use it to stalk your pictures. I have no problem with sharing the wonderful world of Facebook with all ages. However, in sharing Facebook with all ages, drama of all ages is also shared.
I have no problem with people posting who they are in a relationship with on Facebook. However, when you break up with the same person six times, you really need to stop putting it on Facebook as ''complicated.'' We all know your relationship must be really complicated; however, we get to a point where we do not care. Do you really live by the words, ''It's not official until it's on Facebook?'' Come on people, grow up.
My sister told me two kids from my high school have been in a ''complicated relationship'' for almost two months now. It's just weird.
By setting your status to ''complicated,'' you are telling people your current relationship is having serious issues. Maybe you like the attention that the status brings, but it is annoying for the rest of us.
This leads me to believe that the two people, or at least one of the persons ,does not want to fully be in this relationship. I hate to break it to you both, but you may just be delaying the inevitable. Break up already.
Another trend I see on Facebook that is almost as annoying is when people list that they are in an ''open relationship.'' What the hell does that mean? Does that mean you are in a relationship with someone but you can cheat on each other and it doesn't matter? Why would you let people know you are in that kind of a relationship? I think, or hope, that half the people who write that on Facebook are joking.
Facebook is an amazing invention that I spend a ton of time on. However, I think this element of it is just plain stupid.
