James Franco on first seeing 'The Room' in BC

A delightful tribute to the joy and madness of making movies, The Disaster Artist follows the outrageous adventures of eccentric filmmaker Tommy Wiseau and his best friend, actor Greg Sestero.

The Disaster Artist releases in theaters December 1.

Franco and Wiseau have been conducting a variety of interviews at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, and in one with Vanity Fair, Franco revealed that Wiseau suggested Johnny Depp play him during their first phone call.

"Because even though at the centre of this film is this really bad movie, I put so much of myself into this. I just wanted to do my own thing", he said. Based on The Room star Greg Sestero's book of the same name, The Disaster Artist is an uproarious and unbelievable true story attempting to piece together how the unknowable Wiseau created his unlikely classic.

Rogen and the Franco brothers have collaborated on numerous projects throughout the years. We also get a sense that Franco isn't making a total mockery of Wiseau; in a weird parallel, Franco's commitment to channeling Wiseau seems to match Wiseau's commitment to...whatever has most recently popped up in his head. The enduring culture of appreciation around the movie exists in a world where there's no danger of taking The Room at face value, and The Disaster Artist does away with that tension altogether. The ensemble also features Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver, Ari Graynor, and Jason Mantzoukas.

Reviews for The Disaster Artist have been generally positive.
